If you want a top-notch smile and oral health, then you need to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Tooth decay occurs when plaque and bacteria have the chance to attack the tooth enamel. When this happens, those dangerous substances create a cavity. If it’s not treated quickly, it can spread and result in tooth loss. Gum disease occurs when you fail to remove plaque from your smile regularly. When this happens, the plaque irritates and infects the gums. Eventually, it can deteriorate the jawbone and result in loose and lost teeth.

As you may already know, it’s best to prevent these dental issues as much as possible. Our dentist, Dr. Norman B. Fine, would like to give you the instructions on how to do so.

First, keep up on oral hygiene. This should include brushing your smile twice a day, flossing your smile once a day, and rinsing your mouth with mouthwash daily. These things help you remove the plaque and bacteria that threaten to destroy your smile. So, make sure you perform each task thoroughly. As you do so, please use a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash that have been approved by the American Dental Association.

Second, keep up with your regular dental checkups. This means you need to visit your dentist every six months for a routine dental cleaning and exam. These appointments are very important when preventing tooth decay and gum disease, especially because it deeply cleans your smile, removes hardened tartar, and strengthens your teeth. So, make sure to keep up with your appointments.
