Periodontitis is a serious and dangerous dental issue that develops when plaque and tartar aren’t removed from your teeth and gumline regularly. Typically, this is caused by poor oral hygiene and failure to attend your six-month checkups. This disease is very dangerous for the smile and oral health and it’s important to get it treated right away. There are treatments that can help with each stage of gum disease, which are gingivitis and periodontitis. Our dentist, Dr. Norman B. Fine, is happy to tell you all about them. Those treatments are:

For Gingivitis

-Dental checkup (The cleanings provided at your checkup will remove the plaque and tartar from your teeth and gums, which will reverse the gum disease and restore the health of your smile.)

-Pristine oral hygiene (It’s vital to deeply clean your teeth and gums regularly. So, don’t forget to brush twice a day and floss and rinse daily.)

For Periodontitis

-Scaling and root planing (This involves scraping the plaque and tartar from your teeth and root surfaces and then smoothing out the root to prevent bacteria buildup.)

-Pocket reduction treatment (This involves cleaning the gum pocket, folding the gums back, smoothing out the damaged bone, and promoting healing in the gums and well as gum reattachment to the teeth.)

-Gum grafts (This involves using tissues from other areas of the mouth and suturing them over the exposed roots.)

-Bone grafts (This involves using natural or synthetic bone as well as tissue-stimulating proteins to strengthen, rebuild or replace damaged bone in the jaw.)

-More frequent cleaning appointments (You will likely need a checkup every 3-4 months to keep your teeth and gums free from gum disease.)
